The LALSS...

Latin American Leadership Seminar Series (LALSS) 2012

The LALSS is an event created by the Latin American Graduate Student Association. It is a seminar panel where highly influential leaders of the Latin American community in Houston (Company CEOs, Principal Investigators, and re-known Leaders in general) will come to give a 40 minute presentation once a month to the Graduate Student community on one or several of the following topics:

The American Dream. How it was achieved by them, what obstacles they met on their way and tips to succeed in the US.

Discussion of social, cultural or political issues from their country of origin. A way to spread Latin American culture by addressing current issues relevant to all Latin Americans that are not highly known by the American audience in general.

Profile of the employee their company/organization are looking for. As a means of a recruiting effort and networking.

After the main talk a group of 10 Spanish speaking students, selected by sign up priority, will have a coffee break with the speaker in a more personal basis (in Spanish). Here they will have the chance to further interact with the speaker and comment on the lecture.

The event benefits the Rice community in a “Lead by Example” way that comes from knowing the story of the speakers. It will enlighten us on how to succeed after Grad School, what things to do, what to avoid. It will provide us with Role models for us to follow. It expands our general knowledge of Latin America, by addressing novel topics and opinions on them which are not found in news broadcasts or papers. More importantly, it will generate contacts and networking skills that will come in handy for job applications in the future.

Come practice/learn Spanish with us!Join the Spanish...

Come practice/learn Spanish with us!
Join the Spanish Corner!

Recently we had our Los Viejos y Los Nuevos 2012. Thank you to everyone who came, and please, check our Facebook page for pictures. I am proud to see that this event is getting stronger every year, for I believe this represents the strengthening of our organization and our community.

This event is here for us to welcome the new members entering our community, but also for the LAGSA community and the Hispanic community at rice to come together. This evening we were joined by people from HACER, SHPE, Brazil@Rice and the HBSA. And, we were honored by the presence of Staff and Faculty that have been of great help to LAGSA. We had Andy Meretoja and Cory Owen from the OISS, Prof. Seiichi Matsuda, chair of the Chemistry Dept., and Mr. DavidMedina, director of Multicultural Community Relations at Rice. The visitors we had represent not only the connections and collaborations we are starting, but more fundamentally our integration into the larger community, and our growing involvement in its activity.

LAGSA is an organization that has grown a lot in the last year, always striving to do better, and always doing more. During the last year, LAGSA took an important role in the Graduate International Cultural Night by helping in the organization and performing with its band (thank you to Victor Del Carpio and all our band members). We also started the Spanish Club, of which the Spanish Corner has become one of our most popular programs (thanks to Emilian Nica.) The popularity of our Tango Club increased (thanks to Mauricio Rinaldi’s organization and our instructors.) We started our yearly Latin-American Coffee Break, “Merienda Latina”, and improved over the existing Parranda Latina to make it even better, bigger and more fun. (Thank you to all the officers and volunteers that made all these achievements possible. You guys are great.) And what is even better is that there is still more to come.

This year already, it was the first time in history that LAGSA had such an active role in orientation and helping incoming international students. We picked up incoming students from the airport, Matías Kinzuric (Soc Chair) and Mauro Rinaldi (VP) puttogether and taught their own section of the International Student orientation (pictures in Facebook), and we are still offering grocery runs to those students who are just getting adjusted to living in Houston. In the future, there will be a variety of new events and programs starting. Particularly important are the Latin-American Leadership Series, the Soccer Club courtesy of Matías, and the collaborations we are beginning with HACER and the HBSA.

All of these great things couldn’t happen if it weren’t for you, for the collaboration, help and sacrifice of the members of our community that are the driving force behind everything we do. I am proud of being part of LAGSA and of the Hispanic community on campus. Every time I see more and more proof, in what we do, that we are truly great. Thank you all, for all that you do, and lets keep making our Hispanic community strong and stronger.

This award is a great honor for us. But most importantly it is an honor for LAGSA. That two of our officers are among this year’s recipients says much about the increasing strength of our Latin community and our impact in the Rice community at large. Anything we might have done to deserve these awards, we did not do alone. If we succeeded in our endeavors, it was thanks to the help and efforts of everyone in LAGSA, and for that we are thankful.
Lets keep being strong together.

Yours truly,

Victor Del Carpio Neyra
LAGSA Vice President

Gabriel Ceriotti
LAGSA President

Congratulations to our LAGSA members!

The Rice GSA (Graduate Student Association) annually confers awards in recognition of exemplary service to graduate students at Rice University to encourage and recognize outstanding service to graduate student life and education. The Robert Lowry Patten award, is intended to honor graduate students who might not have been honored for their service and achievements on behalf of graduate students.

For those who don’t know the GICN is an event where international graduate students show their talents by performing on stage while the attendees (us) enjoy treats of delicious international cuisine. At the beginning of this event there is usually a flag precession ceremony where Rice students from around the world carry their country’s flag so we can all see who we are and where we come from. This year, in order to ensure everyone who wants to participate in the flag precession can do so, we are starting to recruit flag bearers early. If you would like to represent your country and would be willing to volunteer 15 min of your time on the evening of (Fri) Feb 17th to carry your flag, please fill this form. Flags will be provided by the OISS and the GICN committee.

Spanish Corner Volunteers

Hey all,

Welcome back to school !

My name is Emil Nica, I am in charge of the Spanish Corner and I am writing in regard to some volunteering.

As you might already know, we’re planning on providing three outreach programs on behalf of LAGSA for this semester. Spanish Corner is essentially a place for non-natives to practice speaking Spanish. For the other two programs, Spanish 101 and Spanish Circle, we need some volunteers.

For Spanish 101 we want to match our volunteers with small groups of people who have little knowledge of Spanish. This entails weekly one-hour (at maximum) meetings where our volunteers informally teach some very basic notions ( how to greet people, simple general things etc.). Victor and Gabriel have already volunteered for this.

For the Spanish Circle, we were planning several events. We would like to get some cooked food for one of our meetings ( we would provide you with the ingredients you request). If you have some knowledge of Latin American literature and you wouldn’t mind selecting a small piece of poetry or prose and discussing it in one of our meetings we would love to talk to you. Finally, if you feel you can show some folks how to dance some specific dances let us know.

We realize that everybody’s time is valuable and that volunteering necessarily involves some sacrifices. We hope that as our programs grow in the future we can provide some more substantial incentives. For now, we would cordially ask you to give us some assistance since the Spanish Corner is an important part of LAGSA outreach.

Please let us know if you can volunteer by sending us a message at riceunivlagsa@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Emil Nica
Spanish Corner Officer
LAGSA

Happy New Year!
